Favorite Vampire Characters
Without being completely egotistical, if I had to list my favorite vampire characters I would probably start rattling off some of my own. I love my vampires, so it’s natural that I would favor them above all else. However, I will try to stray from that, if only for a moment.
If I had to pick three vampires that I am partial to in the entertainment world I would pick Lestat (arguably one of the best depictions of a vampire since Dracula) and Marius, courtesy of Anne Rice, and Eric Northman, who comes from the mind of Charlaine Harris. I am also a huge Selene fan from the Underworld film series.
Like Lestat, Eric is everything that is sexy about a vampire. They both possess a lust for life. They are hedonists, taking great pleasure in both feeding and sex. On the written page and in film both vampires, more than any I can think of, are completely intoxicating. I cannot get enough of either.
However, from a film perspective I should mention I am far more fond of Stewart Townsend as Lestat than I ever was of Tom Cruise.

“Alone. Yes, that’s the key word, the most awful word in the English tongue. Murder doesn’t hold a candle to it and hell is only a poor synonym.”
― Stephen King
“The world changes, we do not, therein lies the irony that kills us.”
― Anne Rice, Interview with the Vampire
“It’s an awful truth that suffering can deepen us, give a greater lustre to our colours, a richer resonance to our words.”
― Anne Rice, The Queen of the Damned
“I have lived lies. I have done it again and again. I live lies because I cannot endure the weakness of anger, and I cannot admit the irrationality of love.-Marius”

“Evil is a point of view. We are immortal. And what we have before us are the rich feasts that conscience cannot appreciate and mortal men cannot know without regret. God kills, and so shall we; indiscriminately He takes the richest and the poorest, and so shall we; for no creatures under God are as we are, none so like Him as ourselves, dark angels not confined to the limits of hell but wandering His earth and all its kingdoms.”
― Anne Rice
“Everyone knows the phenomenon of trying to hold your breath underwater – how at first it’s alright and you can handle it, and then as it gets closer and closer to the time when you must breathe, how urgent the need becomes, the lust and the hunger to breathe. And then the panic sets in when you begin to think that you won’t be able to breathe – and finally, when you take in air and the anxiety subsides…that’s what it’s like to be a vampire and need blood.”
-Francis Ford Coppola’s journal in “BS Dracula: The Film and the Legend”
“How sad it is! I shall grow old, and horrid, and dreadful. But this picture will remain always young. It will never be older than this particular day of June. . . . If it was only the other way! If it was I who were to be always young, and the picture that were to grow old! For this–for this–I would give everything! Yes, there is nothing in the whole world I would not give!”
-The Picture of Dorian Gray
